Everyday Matters

Over spring break I read this inspirational book by the talented illustrator Danny Gregory. The author tells his story of coping with the shock and discouragement of his wife's near death accident (falling onto the subway tracks). The book is a compilation of drawings out of his journal and his thoughts on dealing with unexpected circumstances of life, for him, having a newly disabled wife. Gregory's form of therapy is journaling and drawing. His perspective is truly inspiring. By drawing, channeling his thoughts to focus on the objects and beauty of the world surrounding him, Gregory builds a greater appreciation for life. His eyes were opened to the many subtleties of the world that can bring joy which so many people overlook in the day-to-day bustle. Engaging in art gave him a new optimism and even a greater love of his wife and son. Instead of mopping and feeling sorry for himself that his life wasn't meeting his previous standards, he opened his mind to a new challenging discipline that gave him great wisdom. Who knew that (to some a silly pastime)drawing could bring someone out of the depths of depression and make a better man.  This book really motivated me to become more committed to my sketchbook. Check out a few pages of the book! I love the loose, comfortable style of his hand. Ok I'm gunna go draw now
